Grubb
& Ellis - History and Tradition
Since its founding in
1958, Grubb & Ellis has prided itself on its dedication to client-satisfaction.
From its beginnings as single office in Northern California, that
dedication has allowed Grubb & Ellis to become one of the nation's
leading commercial real estate services firms, with offices in virtually
every major metropolitan market in the U.S.
In early 1981, Grubb
& Ellis and GMR Properties of Jacksonville, Florida, merged
to form the new Grubb & Ellis Company, a publicly held corporation.
During the '80s, Grubb & Ellis grew rapidly through the acquisition
of well-established real estate firms in the Pacific Northwest,
Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Texas and California.
In the early to mid-'90s,
Grubb & Ellis undertook a major restructuring that refocused
efforts on the company's two core businesses, Advisory Services
and Management Services.
In January 1996, the
company completed the acquisition of the minority interest in Axiom
Real Estate Management, Inc., its property and facilities management
subsidiary which originated in 1992 as an independently operated
joint venture between Grubb & Ellis and IBM Corp. Now a wholly-owned
subsidiary of the Company, Axiom was renamed Grubb & Ellis Management
Services, Inc. in September 1997 to more closely align management
services with other service lines.
In early 1997, Grubb
& Ellis launched a national affiliate program in which the company
forms formal relationships with leading local real estate companies
to expand into key markets where it previously did not have a formal
presence. The company also formalized its Corporate Services Group
and Institutional Services Group to help better manage client requirements
for more services in more markets through a single point of accountability.
Also in 1997, to be more
centrally located to its clients and to better position the company
for further expansion into Europe, Grubb & Ellis moved its corporate
headquarters office from San Francisco to Northbrook, Illinois,
a northern suburb of Chicago.
In 1999, Grubb &
Ellis continued its tradition of offering more and better services
to its clients by acquiring the assets of Landauer Associates, Inc.
This addition added another dimension to the company's advisory
and financial services businesses. Now Landauer Realty Group and
Grubb & Ellis can claim some of the nation's strongest research,
capital markets, valuation and consulting capabilities in the industry.
Today, Grubb & Ellis
is one of the largest publicly traded commercial real estate services
firms in the United States. The company is traded on the New York
Stock Exchange (symbol: GBE).
